The first Concord Birth Trolley system in Latvia installed at Riga Maternity Hospital

The first Concord Birth Trolley resuscitation and stabilization system for newborns in Latvia has been installed at Riga Maternity Hospital — an innovative device designed to improve the care of premature and ill newborns during childbirth.

When a baby is born, the placenta continues to supply blood, oxygen, and stem cells for a short period — all of which are crucial for immediate adaptation outside the mother’s body and for further development. Therefore, midwives typically wait a few minutes before cutting the umbilical cord. However, in some cases, the newborn may require immediate medical intervention.

To ensure professional use of the new system, from April 23 to April 25, the medical staff of Riga Maternity Hospital — including neonatologists, gynecologists, midwives, surgical nurses, pediatric nurses, and anesthesiologists — received theoretical and practical training led by international expert and clinical training manager Björn Valentijn.

Advantages of the Concord Birth Trolley: The Concord Birth Trolley is a mobile unit that can be equipped with all the necessary devices and tools to properly monitor and treat newborns who require extra support during the transition period:

  • Unique cradle design with a patented umbilical cord opening – allows safe positioning of the newborn, even with a short cord;

  • Flexible positioning – adjustable height and a rotating arm allow the baby to be placed very close to the mother;

  • Unobstructed access during delivery – in urgent cases, the cradle can be easily moved aside to provide access to the mother while continuing newborn stabilization;

  • Customizable for hospital needs – the trolley can be outfitted with familiar medical equipment in accordance with local protocols and guidelines.

Improvements in newborn care enabled by the system:

  • Initiate stabilization or resuscitation of the newborn without the need to cut the umbilical cord immediately;

  • Provide care while maintaining access to placental blood and oxygen supply;

  • Reduce stress for both mother and baby;

  • Improve survival and developmental outcomes for premature infants.

The manufacturer, Concord Neonatal, supports babies through solutions that combine innovative products, well-designed processes, and a knowledge-based approach — creating a birth environment “without disruption.”

Both the newly acquired skills and the installation of the Concord Birth Trolley resuscitation system represent a significant contribution to enhancing the quality of care for newborns, especially those born prematurely.
